4 Health Boosting Elixirs you Can Make At Home

The next time you are feeling a cold coming on, low on energy or just in need of a good cleanse and body detoxification, don’t go buy expensive products at the health food store.  Instead, use these ideas for making your own at home heath boosting elixirs: 

Energy boosting

If you want to boost your energy, stay away from energy drinks or caffeine and opt for beetroot juice.  Beetroot juice has nitrates, which are converted to nitric oxide in the body, which then increase the body’s oxygen efficiency.  Better oxygen use translates to more oxygen being delivered throughout the body and an oxygenated body is an energetic body.  This is especially helpful for endurance athletes who rely on oxygen efficiency for performance.  For your elixir, mix 3-4 tbsp of beet juice with 1-2 cups of water and a couple of wedges of lemon.  It tastes good and is very effective!

Immunity boosting

 If you are suffering from a cold, virus or recovering from an illness or injury, the focus should be all about boosting your immune system.  We often think of our immune system only when we have the flu or are getting sick, but the immune system is active all the time, helping with everything from healing our cuts and wounds to helping us recover from sports injuries to working behind the scenes in preventing us from getting sick in the first place.  To help this amazing system, one of the best things you can do is take in high doses of vitamin C.  Increase your citrus intake, drink water infused with lemon, orange, and ginger, eat the skin on kiwis and stay away from sugary food and drink as these increase the burden on your immune system.

Recovery 

Made out of activated charcoal, many people may use this elixir for curing a hangover, but really it can be for recovery from over-indulging, recovery from having acidic or fried, fatty food, or recovery from a few weeks of bad eating choices.  Simply add 1 tsp. activated charcoal to 3 tbsp. coconut water and then fill the glass with water.  Stir to dissolve the charcoal and drink up.  It will likely make your mouth and teeth black, but over time this will dissipate as the charcoal exercises its chelation properties, binding to the toxins and pulling them out.  This is the same action as occurs in your digestive system and throughout your body, making this great for acting as you clean up crew.

Detox

If you are looking for a way to cleanse and detoxify the body, giving the digestive system a break and relying on elixirs and water can be a great solution.  After all, they require no digestive efforts, leaving the digestive system a chance to be able to have a rest and perform repair efforts such as improving mucosal membranes, replenishing enzymes, or diverting energy or areas of inflammation. 

One of the best detoxifying elixirs you can make is with lemon, ginger, turmeric, apple cider vinegar and cayenne.  Add them to water, stir to incorporate and dissolve the turmeric and cayenne and drink up.  If it is too strong, you can add a few drops of maple syrup or raw honey, or simply dilute it more.  The apple cider vinegar and lemon are alkalinizing, the turmeric is anti-inflammatory and while the ginger targets the digestive tract. The cayenne is a stimulant, awakening and initiating action where necessary within the body.
